With our 250-Year Jubilee upon us, a lot of celebrating is going on around our Archdiocese these days, and Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries is right in the midst of it. That was clear on Saturday, April 2, when dozens of our employees joined the crowd for “Camino: A Walk With Jesus.”
They were among more than 2,000 walkers made the 10-mile journey from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel to Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral. They ambled down busy boulevards, quiet residential blocks and through colorful ethnic neighborhoods before arriving at the grand cathedral in Downtown L.A.
Some singing, others chatting with strangers and others joined arm in arm, they represented all ages, backgrounds and levels of fitness. Leading the group, in spirit at least, was our Archbishop, Rev. Jose Gomez. The 70-year-old made the entire trek, matching younger walkers stride for stride, while greeting well-wishers and even granting a few media interviews.
It was a perfect day for such an excursion – mostly overcast with temperatures in the 60s, which ensured things stayed comfortable clear to the finish line. Plenty of residents turned out in their front yards to wish walkers well, while passing drivers honked and waved in their own show of encouragement.
Elena Vasquez, a community outreach representative for the cemeteries and mortuaries, seemed to voice the prevailing mood among the group: “It was a beautiful day and we met so many wonderful people along the way. I’m just so happy I could be here.”
