It is an ancient Christian practice to entomb the dead beneath the altars of cathedral churches. So princes were buried in the great Gothic monuments in France. So the early martyrs were laid to rest beside the relics of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome. And, still today in Los Angeles, the faithful may find rest in the Crypt Mausoleum of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
In the heart of the city, the Crypt is easy to visit, accessible by public transportation. It is adorned with some of the finest works of contemporary sacred art — stained glass, etchings, sculpture, and inscriptions. The Crypt is the deeply symbolic foundation of a celebrated work of sacred architecture.
