The holiday season is often described as a time of joy, family gatherings, and celebrations. Yet for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one, this time of year can feel overwhelming and lonely. The empty chair at the table, the traditions that now feel incomplete, and the memories that surface can make grief especially heavy during Christmas and the New Year.

If you are walking through this season with a grieving heart, know that you are not alone. Your Catholic faith offers a source of comfort and strength, reminding us that Christ came into the world to bring light into darkness and hope into sorrow. Through prayer, the sacraments, and the support of your parish community, healing is possible—even in the midst of pain.

Many parishes throughout the archdiocese offer special ministries dedicated to supporting those who mourn. Ministries of Consolation or Bereavement Ministries provide compassionate care, prayerful accompaniment, and opportunities to share your story with others who understand. These ministries often host support groups, memorial services, and seasonal gatherings designed to help you find peace and connection during difficult times.

Tips for Coping with Grief During the Holidays

  1. Give Yourself Permission to Grieve
It’s okay to feel sadness during a season that emphasizes joy. Allow yourself to experience your emotions without guilt.
  2. Create New Traditions
Honor your loved one by lighting a candle, saying a prayer, or sharing a favorite memory during holiday gatherings.
  3. Reach Out for Support
Connect with your parish’s Bereavement Ministry or Ministry of Consolation. Sharing your journey with others can bring comfort and healing.
  4. Focus on Faith
Attend Mass, pray the Rosary, or spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. These moments of grace can help restore peace to your heart.
  5. Take Care of Yourself
Rest, eat well, and allow time for quiet reflection. Grief is exhausting—be gentle with yourself.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid."
 —
John 14:27

If you are struggling this holiday season, we encourage you to reach out to your parish and ask about these resources. Allow your faith community to walk with you and let the promise of Christ’s love bring comfort to your heart.

While we do not provide direct counseling, you can find more information about parishes that do offer support, as well as details on Catholic Cemeteries and Mortuaries, by visiting our Ministry of Consolation page or by contacting us directly at 213-637-7838.

A Prayer for Those Who Grieve

Heavenly Father, In this season of joy, we bring before You hearts that are heavy with loss. Comfort those who mourn with Your tender mercy. Surround them with Your love and grant them peace that surpasses all understanding. May the light of Christ shine in their darkness and remind them of the hope of eternal life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
